This means many domains were unreachable for a period of time.

"Network Solutions is one of the leading domain registrars and DNS hosting providers in the world, managing more than 7.6 million domain names. "

What is a DDOS attack?

A denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users...

Update : Network Solutions DNS
January 23, 2009

Update : DNS queries for web sites should be responding normally. Thank you all for your understanding. As always, we will continue to work to take measures to prevent these and other types of technical issues caused by third parties that may impact our customers.

Update :

There is a spike in DNS query volumes that is causing latency for the delay in web sites resolving. This is a result of a DDOS attack.  We are taking measures to mitigate the attack and speed up queries

I wonder who was affected?

The only way to find out is using a whois tool to identify the name servers.  On the public side, people would have encountered problems trying to reach various websites. Once enough people started complaining, they found the common thread to be  networksolution's name servers.

ie WildWest.com, if they had the same issue, people would have encountered problems reaching lahrbrat.com

What are name servers?

A name server is a server that returns an IP address when given a domain name. This IP address is basically the domain's location on the Internet.
